It is Time to Pray the Prayers of King David

9/20/2012

Revelation 1:6 and 5:10 say that we are called to be "kings and priests."  These are two different functions.  Hebrews 7 illustrates well the role of a priest (worship with offerings and intercede for people) while Revelation 19:11 sums up the role of a king well (judge, make decisions and make war).

These functions were summed up well in David's heart such that God declared in Acts 15:16 that in the latter days He would restore David's tabernacle.  It is important to realize that almost every Psalm was written while David was the king.  Kings are called to judge (make decisions) regarding issues of truth, justice, righteousness and mercy.

Today in the Church we excel at mercy but are often weak on issues of justice and righteousness.  It is because we confuse personal responsibility with corporate responsibility.

There are four kinds of governments.  First, we are called to exercise dominion in our own personal life.  Second, there is a government system in a family.  The Church provides the third example which has a governmental structure that King Jesus established.  The final form of government is civil government.  One of the primary responsibilities of a government is to protect its citizenry.  So when David wrote the Psalms which he delivered to the Levites overseeing the tabernacle he set up he was praying as a king responsible for many people.  As the king he appealed to a higher court to ask for help in rendering mercy to the innocent.  Mercy for the innocent meant often meant justice applied that led to destruction for those who violated God's eternal laws (murder, theft, lying, lawlessness etc.).

Today I received requests from three leaders within KLI from three different nations that shared their victories and their challenges.  In one case a pastor's life was threatened by Islamic extremists and in a region many churches faced violence from Islamic mobs.  When our overseer appealed to the authorities for help in protecting the local congregations they were ignored and they were offered no protection.  Civil government failed to perform one of its primary functions.  I do not know if in this case they "will not" or that they "can not" due to lack of resources, but the bottom line is the Church, God's people are vulnerable.

When civil government fails to perform their role then we have to appeal to the other forms of government starting with Church and then moving to the family.  I encouraged one leader that it is time to pray the prayers that David prayed.  It is time to appeal to the courtroom of heaven.  Here is an excerpt from the email I sent.

It is time to pray the prayers of King David and implement God's promise of sure mercy.  In ORT I've provided you a way to establish 24/7 prayer in a city like King David did on Mount Zion.  In 1st Chronicles 16 it says after David set up the ark if the covenant (type of Gods presence) then he delivered his 1st Psalm to Asaph.

David (the king) wrote Psalms that He then passed on to those who were praying and doing praise and worship.  He had them sign and declare the Psalm which is also a powerful form of agreement in prayer.

In the New Testament we see King Herod opposing the gospel with violence.  He suffered what he sowed.  Prayer was lifted up and Herod died.  (Acts 12:1-25).

Isaiah 14:8-21 gives us a look at what the church might have prayed if they followed he example David set, and I believe they did. It follows the pattern in scripture.  Pharaoh killed the 1st born in Israel so when God delivered His people the Egyptians suffered the loss of their first born and more.  The enemy's very actions and decisions determined their own judgment.

So call the Church to plead your case using the Psalms like the chapter of Psalm 59.

Remember, Jesus is our legal Advocate, our heavenly attorney.  Share your case and then let Him plead your case before the Ancient of Days and the accuser of the brethren.

1 John 2:1 My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.

Daniel 7:21-22  I was watching; and the same horn was making war against the saints, and prevailing against them, 22 until the Ancient of Days came, and a judgment was made in favor of the saints of the Most High, and the time came for the saints to possess the kingdom.

Jeremiah 25:31 A noise will come to the ends of the earth — For the Lord has a controversy with the nations;  He will plead His case with all flesh. He will give those who are wicked to the sword, ’ says the Lord.”

Here are some more examples of imprecatory prayer.   Psalms 7, 35, 55, 58, 59, 69, 79, 109, 137 and 139 all contain prayers for God's judgment on the psalmist's enemies.

I pray God give you wisdom.  Our Lord is a God of mercy, justice, righteousness and truth.  The truth is you have appealed to government authorities who either will not or cannot protect you.  So now it is time to appeal to a higher authority and ask for our Lord Jesus Christ to intervene.  It is not right nor just what those bound by the anti-Christ spirit behind Islam are doing.  Pray they repent and turn to Jesus, pray they not violently  attack, but for those who cannot live in peace, Lord remove them in righteousness and justice.  In mercy, deliver your people through heavenly justice like you delivered the Israelites from Pharoh and the early Church from Herod.
