Last Sunday the Lord led me to deliver a message I had never heard anyone else preach before in my almost 40 years as a Christian. It was titled, "Turn the Other Cheek & Self Defense."
Starting with the be-attitudes I took our congregation on a journey through the scriptures and American history. We explored the role that the Church played in the founding of this nation and discovered that a revelation of what the Bible says about self defense was critical. Frankly, I was shocked that the Lord led me to teach on this with everything that is going on in the world today.
Then 9 people were murdered in a prayer meeting yesterday including the pastor at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church. I immediately sent out a call to pray through our network for this church, the family members of the slain, this city and for the quick capture of the perpetrator; that mercy would be extended to the families and protection for the rest of the community through swift justice. Thankfully the shooter has been captured.
This morning Fox and Friends interviewed the AME pastor of the Call Church in Virginia (click here for the interview). I appreciated his sobering call to not rush to judgment as well as mentioning the rising hostility against Christian's in this country because of our Biblical views. He then went on to challenge pastors saying:
I would urge pastors to prepare to defend themselves... it's sad, we've got to arm ourselves... at least have some people in the church who are prepared to defend the church when women and children are attacked....
That gave the commentators much to talk about. It also provided real context to what the Lord had me teach last Sunday: Talk about a prophetic message!
You can access the teaching and the notes through KLI's armory. Here's a summary of the message.
Starting with the Be-attitudes Tim takes a scriptural look at the 4 kinds of government and the issues we face today. This includes a historical review involving Rev. Jonas Clark & the role the Church played in the "shot heard round the world" at Lexington. History records that because of his teaching on self-defense his congregation was prepared to stand against the British regulars in the first shots of the American Revolution.
